Vera Rubin is the mother of Rebecca Rubin.
Personality and Facts[]
Vera Rubin--whom Rebecca calls "Mama"--is a Russian Jewish immigrant. She and her parents immigrated from the country when she was younger.
Vera helps keep Jewish traditions and holidays in the home and finds creative ways to adapt them into American life (for example, finding a way to bake Rebecca's birthday cake during Passover--when leavened products are not eaten or kept in the home--by using a dozen eggs). She wants Rebecca to grow up and become a teacher, but indulges her daughter's desire to visit movie studios and have interest in the movies. While Rebecca's actions may shock or startle her, she does her best to try and understand her daughter, including her desire to be seen as more mature.
