Samantha: Lost and Found is a bound, abridged and modified book of the last three books of Samantha's Central Series.
Stories Included[]
- Happy Birthday, Samantha! (truncated, see below)
- Samantha Saves the Day
- Changes for Samantha
Changes from Lost and Found[]
- Several--but not all--illustrations have been placed back into the text, including the Friends and Family/dramatis personae; some have been cropped. Jenny O'Malley and Bridget O'Malley are given separate portraits where they previously shared one.
- Any instances of "Admiral" for Archibald Beemis's title that had been capitalized are now lowercase.
- Street numbers (e.g. 17th Street) are now spelled out (Seventeenth Street).
- The first two chapters with Samantha's first (ruined) birthday celebration in New Bedford are removed. The volume opens with Samantha and Grandmary arriving in New York City, with an addition that they are coming to New York City as a treat for her birthday. This also makes Chapter Three: New York City now Chapter One, with other chapters renumbered in order.
- While minor descriptions and smaller events within the text are removed (e.g. Samantha walking the twins to their cabin after they arrive, the initial watercolor painting before going up to the attic--changed to be them going for brushes to start), no major events from Samantha Saves the Day or Changes For Samantha are removed.
- The paragraphs appended to the end of Samantha Saves the Day where Grandmary accepts the Admiral's proposal and they leave to honeymoon are moved to the start of Chapter Eight: A New Home; Grandmary's time with Samantha on Piney Point making new memories on Teardrop Island remain at the end of Chapter Seven.
- Chapter Eight: A New Home edits the paragraphs that were added slightly; Samantha is now stated to have explicitly moved to New York City with Gardner and Cornelia, rather than this written as a temporary situation. There are also small edits where Samantha states she misses Mount Bedford--further confirming it is a permanent move.
- To align with events changed in Samantha: The Gift, Nellie and her family are still in New York City, rather than living in Mount Bedford. Thus when her parents die, they move within the city to move in with Mike O'Malley. Changes in text are made to not mention whom Nellie worked for in Mount Bedford, so there is no mention of Mrs. Van Sicklen (or Mrs. Ryland); Gardner calls the superintendent of the building Nellie had lived in in New York instead, and thus learns more about Mike.[1]
- Samantha is upset at dinner the same day after learning that Nellie and her sisters are in an orphanage, rather than breakfast the next morning.
- Nellie only worries about getting caught when she and her sisters escape to Samantha's house, rather than talking about looking for work; she still goes out to look while they are hiding.
