January 2020[]

January 2, 2020 / Disability and Language - New (Clarification) of Policy
Here at the A*G Wiki, we use the appropriate words for disabilities. Which is, in fact, disability or disabled. One of your admins is disabled. People with disabilities want to be called the terms they choose. Joss - as a character - is disabled. This is an appropriate term to use to discuss Joss; she is partially deaf or hard of hearing, and visibly disabled (as in, her disability is visible, not that she has a lack of visibility).
The term "disabled" is appropriate to use to refer to her as a character and a doll. "Cutesy" or covert language that tries to hide disability does not help people or show the actuality of their needs. Do not use cutesy or fluff language, nor condescending or rude language. This falls under our global rule of bigotry.

"It is okay to use words or phrases such as "disabled," "disability," or "people with disabilities" when talking about disability issues." Respectful Disability Language

This has now been clarified on the wiki under Disability and Language.

February 29th, 2020 / New Releases for Joss, Moddies, and Historicals

March 2020[]

March 28th, 2020 / American Girl and Responses to COVID-19/The American Girl Online Library - Week One
A lot has changed in a month due to the worldwide coronavirus/Covid-19 pandemic.
  • Starting March 15, all American Girl Place stores closed. While initially only cited as until at least March 27th, by April 4th American Girl confirmed they will remain closed until further notice.
  • American Girl is continuing to ship items from their warehouses and take online orders. However, their warehouse is in Wisconsin and the state may lock down to non-essential business closures at any given time.
  • Starting near the end of March, American Girl opened the Stay and Play website. This site has tips and activities for at-home fun. This includes free digital copies of various books at American Girl Online Library.. April 1st released digital copies of Nanea: The Spirit of Aloha, the accompanying teacher's guide, and A Smart Girl's Guide: Worry.
We are not a resource for information on health, safety, and/or protection. For that, please look up information through reliable sources, like the US CDC or your local state or national government. Stay home, stay apart from each other, and wash your hands.
Take care of yourselves. It's scary out there.

April 10, 2020 / This Week on the American Girl Online Library - Week Two
This week's free books from the American Girl Online Library are Kit: Read All About It!, the accompanying teacher's guide, and A Smart Girl's Guide: Money.
Nethilia, The Admin
April 19, 2020 / This Week (and Last!) on the American Girl Library - Weeks Three and Four / Image Sourcing and Quality and How Failure Can Get You Banned
Last week's free books from the American Girl Online Library are The Feelings Book: The Care and Keeping of Your Emotions and The Care and Keeping of You: The Body Book for Girls.
This week's free books are two Historical Character Mysteries: Samantha's The Curse of Ravenscourt and Felicity's Lady Margaret's Ghost.
All previous books offered are still available on the site at present.

News being stated, we now have to delve into policy. Because people aren't behaving.
I, Admin Nethilia, have been into American Girl in the most technical sense since 1986 when I first saw the ads for the first three in Doll Reader magazine, and part of the fandom since 2005. I know about various websites, including, say, one that is about the History of American Girl that is in my saved bookmarks and compares variants of American Girl illustrations that were changed for Samantha, Addy, Molly, and Felicity.
The scans of said illustrations are easily identifiable from that site. Which means uploading them here after taking them from that site violates our policies against swiping from other sites.
This Wiki's been around for over a decade. You would think by now the fact the images aren't up here would clue editors into the fact that this must not have been done for a good reason.
If I or any other admin cannot reliably trust any of your illustration image sources, we will go through and purge them all from the wiki files. Which wastes our time and yours. And then block the offender to make sure we don't have to deal with this again.
Good Article Images and You! states that improper images will be removed upon discovery and result in bans. I must not have been clear enough. Let me be explicit.
Bans for uploading images that are sourced to other sites starts at a month and can be extended to upwards of a year. They can even become indefinite--aka a permanent block--if you've done this before and/or we have to waste long spans of time to remove the offending images from both articles and the file database.
If you can't scan images from the books yourself, then you can wait until someone can. No images at all actually is preferred to blatant image theft.

April 24, 2020 / This Week on the American Girl Library - Week Five

Starting June 8th, American Girl will launch the "Heroes With Heart" Contest, asking children with the help of their parents to nominate a hero who has made a difference during the pandemic (such as medical professionals, essential retail workers, delivery drivers, etc.) American Girl will select five Grand Prize winners; the nominator will receive a $200 American Girl gift card while the honoree will receive a custom doll and outfit in their likeness. June 8, 2020 / Changes to the MCM Sale for 2020
The Madison Children's Museum has released data via e-mail about the logistics of this year's American Girl Benefit Sale, and the changes that are being made due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
  • The sale will be online only, as was expected.
  • Orders can be placed on Saturday, July 25 and Sunday, July 26. This is a change from the original July 11-12 dates, to give time to facilitate the online system.
  • Access to shopping online will be in the same order and weekend day as ticketed entry times. Quantity limits will be in effect, just as at the physical sale, by ticket. A ticket allows one online purchase of a shopping cart of goods, honoring all quantity limits. A second ticket allows another online purchase, with refreshed quantity limits, and so on.
  • As with previous sales, on Sunday there will be additional markdowns and limit changes.
  • All orders will be shipped to the purchaser. Curbside pickup options will not be available. Shipping costs will be calculated during checkout and included in the purchase total at the time of checkout. While MCM is negotiating the best possible deals for shipping, buyers should expect shipping charges similar to standard shipping of items through the post office or UPS store.
  • MCM has decided that no additional tickets will be offered for this year's benefit sale.
  • Dolls and Friends Pajama Party kits will be available in limited quantities. Each kit will include a Bitty Baby doll, special craft project supplies, and an invitation to participate in an exclusive online video party in the fall; exact date(s) will be listed.
Due to the multiple logistic changes, MCM for this year is changing the longstanding refund policy and will offer refunds to current ticket holders. Requests for refunds must be made by the 15th of June. Alternatively--since this is a benefit sale for charity--there will also be an option to donate any unneeded ticket(s) to the cause. People may also transfer their tickets to others.
Full information can be read online at the official website.

June 14, 2020 / American Girl, the Mattel Play Fair Initiative and the Black Lives Matter Movement
in the wake of the Black Lives Matter activity in 2020--a international human rights movement founded in 2013 in response to the acquittal of Trayvon Martin's murderer and amplified in 2020 by the death of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer and the following nation- and worldwide protests--Mattel and its subsidiaries have, like many companies and businesses, spoken out about the movement and recognized their shortcomings in representation and black support in the Mattel Play Fair Initiative. This has been specifically noted in relation to American Girl on their Instagram account and Facebook account, as well as on the corporate site. Specifics noted across the company:
  • Increasing efforts to build a workforce that reflects the diversity of our community, focusing on the development and recruitment of Black talent.
  • Investment in the next generation of the Black community with intention, by providing access and opportunities.
  • Offering products, content and experiences built on the foundation of diversity, ensuring that the stories of the Black community are seen and heard.
  • Mattel is donating $250,000 to NAACP youth programs and going forward will donate proceeds from future product sales and initiatives of at least $250,000 to fund educational programs focused on supporting Black girls.
  • Specific to American Girl, representatives have stated that they will not be retiring the Addy doll nor her mold, both of which have been lessened in promotions and product in recent years.

June 23, 2020 / American Girl's Statement of Commitment to Racial Equality
American Girl has made an official statement of Commitment to Racial Equality on their Instagram account, Twitter accountand Facebook page. ETA: The commitment is now on the website at Our Commitment to Racial Equality (ETA 9/15/2022: This is now a Wayback link).

The company has stated they will accelerate their progress in stories and characters that represent the black community and other communities of color and diversity. Some specifics include:

  • The launch of What It Means to Be an American Girl Today, a series of virtual and in-person discussions about race and diversity. Initial discussion will be led by writers of the Black stories on the line (e.g. Connie Porter, Denise Lewis Patrick) and experts, and help the company listen to the voices of the community.
  • Starting July 1st, all the stories about the Black characters will be added to the Online Library as free downloads. AG is also making a commitment to launch more fiction and non fiction books about topics of racial equality and justice.
  • Bringing more black voices into their discussions and advice on creation including consultants, influencers, parents, and children.
  • The planning and release of a new Black Contemporary character (likely a Girl of the Year) and other contemporary characters of color.
  • The donation of a minimum of $50,000 worth of books to libraries focusing on the stories of Kaya, Addy, Josefina, Rebecca (who is a character of religious diversity but not of color), Nanea, and Melody.

September 6th, 2020 / Official Information on the Upcoming Historical Character, Courtney
CourtneyChangesGame

Welcome, Courtney Moore!

Source: First Book, Courtney Changes the Game, listed on Target Website. Accessed 8/6/2020.
Official news has come out about the upcoming newest Historical Character to be released: Courtney Moore. Courtney will be representing the 1980s, with her books starting in 1986. (In a way, AG has come full circle!) From the cover, we can tell she is white and appears to have an interest in video games. The website listing shows an early October release. No information other than her first book has been released officially.
Yes, officially. This is a reminder, as must be done with all new product and people getting hype and forgetting themselves. Until official images and details are released of anything--dolls, other books, accessories, collections--they are not to be uploaded here or even discussed. Leaked images from a Facebook group that were uploaded to a YouTube page and then screenshot and posted on Instagram? Not official. Blocks will come with mega swiftness.
ETA, 9/10/20: America Girl has put up a preview site stating Courtney's release to be 9/15/20.

September 14, 2020 / Admin and Templates
A long standing policy has had to be outwardly stated because of people misbehaving: Admin and Templates.
Templates are backend coding used across the wiki for article layouts, notes at tops and bottoms, quick categories, and a myriad of other needs that make it so information can be put down with short code rather than a full typing of data every time. Editing a template edits it across every article it is on. This makes them highly sensitive and so they are tightly regulated by Admin and Content Moderators only.
So the policy is short and simple. Do not edit templates unless you are admin or content moderator. Typos and small mistakes are fine. Any other changes whatsoever are not in the realm to touch or anyone else's call to make. Deleting, editing, modifying, or otherwise messing with any template will result in an immediate one month ban, with subsequent violations escalating up to a permanent ban.

September 15, 2020 / It's Totally Courtney! And Moore!
(I'll make all the bad puns I want.)
American Girl's newest Historical Character, Courtney Moore, was totally worth the wait! She launches as Player One with a dibbly fresh mix and match collection:
To celebrate the launch, American Girl has partnered with Girls Who Code. Through December 31, American Girl will match customer donations of $1, 5, or $ 10 to a maximum of $50,000 to support the organization, including outreach to children from historically underrepresented minority groups. They will also be providing a $5,000 scholarship to four Girls Who Code members to help further their education in computer science or a related field. A second book has been mentioned in press release but has not been titled or revealed yet. (Guess we really are doing it 80s style!)
But that's not all! Newly enrolled AG Rewards Members will earn three times the AG Rewards points on an order from American Girl through September 24, 2020. Through November 30, 2020, purchasers will receive a free limited edition poster of all the available Historical Characters and the most recent three Girls of the Year with any 18" doll purchase.
It's absolutely heinous to put up bad articles. So don't do it. Or I'll unplug the arcade cabinet and you'll lose your quarter.

September 19, 2020 / A New Line, and New Characters
Lost in the hoopla of Courtney's release was American Girl's tweet about a new product line featuring a contemporary Black character, as well other contemporary characters of color, to debut in late autumn 2021.
Because sometimes we just can't beat a dead horse enough times, this wiki is a no-speculation zone.

December 2020[]

December 23, 2020 / 2021 Girl of the Year Kira Bailey
American Girl has confirmed with their first catalog of 2021 that the 2021 Girl of the Year will be Kira Bailey. She is visiting her married aunts--as in, to each other--in Australia to help at their wildlife sanctuary post the Australian wildfires. New items are also launching for Truly Me including items focused on travel around the world, which will be a separate news post.
In the spirit of "not getting banned for leaks and nonsense", the admins ask that editors be cautious in their editing of new items. If you suspect what you're going to upload isn't open data, is poorly reviewed, or is otherwise hearsay and you can't back it up? Then maybe, just maybe, don't do it. The bans are still generous.

December 23, 2020 / American Girl Diversity Initiatives Update
American Girl has shared a progress report regarding the Commitment to Racial Equality on their Instagram account and Facebook. Along with previous statements, the following has been stated:
  • The first of the conversation series is due to launch in February 2021 about social justice with the second in April regarding climate change. There will be continued featuring of other young heroes from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and life experiences.
  • August 2021 will bring a book written by Deanna Singh about fighting racism and becoming anti-racist.
  • Teams continue to work on the newly planned but not yet announced new contemporary line with more stories of diversity. The line is looking at a debut in the latter half of 2021.
  • New partnerships will later be announced as well.
2021 is also the 35th anniversary of American Girl. Let's hope the celebration is a good one with lots of diversity and good things.

As well as a new book, Love the Earth. Furthermore, American Girl is supporting WIRES (NSW Wildlife Information, Rescue and Education Service Inc.), the largest wildlife rescue organization in Australia. Purchasers can make a $1, $5 or $10 donation and the company will match up to $25,000.
A set of dresses for Truly Me and Bitty Baby came out, the Dot to Dot Dress and Darling Dots Dress respectively.
We've also had our first block for poor uploads on new things! Don't follow in their footsteps. Leave that energy in 2020.
