Nicki Hoffman is the nineteenth Historical Character, representing the early 2000s and turn of the millennium. Nicki was released in 2023 along with Isabel Hoffman.
Personality and Facts[]
Nicki Hoffman is a nine going on ten year old girl living in Seattle, Washington just before the year 2000 (the turn of the millennium). She is six minutes older than her fraternal twin sister, Isabel, but one inch shorter. The family is interfaith and celebrates both Hanukkah and Christmas, and Nicki opens presents first because she's the older one.
Nicki prefers denim, grunge, ska music, rock, alternative, and skating/skateboarding; she is the "grunge" to Isabel's glitter. She prefers to wear plaid flannel shirts, jeans, and sneakers. She does not like eating raw fish (or fishy smells) and sushi; her father teases that they can't spell "finickiest" without Nicki. She likes sour candy--the more sour, the better, such as Warheads--but her favorite flavor of Baby Bottle Pop is grape since it's purple. She's known to be shy, to the point Isabel makes a point of it; she initially doesn't have any other friends than Isabel, but makes friends with a group of skaters at the skate park once she gets braver and allows herself to become friends with Ari. She at first doesn't like to perform her tricks in front of other people (but will in front of a squirrel) until Ari brings her into the group and she sees others won't make fun of her falling or not mastering a trick.
She's very anxious about the Y2K problem and the risks and worries that have been circulating, so Isabel and her create a list to take her mind off her worries of things to do before New Year's. She's a lot more organized than Isabel and keeps her things neater. She likes to write, especially song lyrics and lists, but is shy about sharing the song lyrics until she confesses to her dad about them. She's not allowed to skateboard in the house or at night.
Nicki and Isabel say they have "twintuition," the ability to read each others minds and know how each other is feeling. However, Nicki is more skeptical, believes their twintuition doesn't always work, and is often irritated by Isabel invoking it due to Isabel using the idea to imply they should be more similar and Nicki should go along with what she wants (such as performing as Sporty Spice with her and her friends). When younger--in second grade--she was more willing to play Sporty Spice to complete the group with Isabel's friends, but now does all she can to avoid it. The girls share a secret handshake they made up when little of linking pinkie fingers on one hand and high-fiving with the other, and say "twinx" when they mean "jinx." Still, Nicki wants to be independent and herself, not always seen as a twin--but also gets very irritated when Isabel or others think she's not enough of a twin because they don't look or act alike.
When it comes to Isabel's friend Quinn, Nicki doesn't really like her; she thinks she and Isabel act too often like they haven't seen each other in weeks even if they were at school the same day, and they often are together until they "run out" of squeals.
Her favorite colors are purple and black, her favorite animal is a dog (she adopts her puppy, Blossom, as a Hanukkah gift on the first day), her favorite band is No Doubt, and her favorite show is The Powerpuff Girls (her favorite character being Blossom). She likes to snack on Wild Berry Pop Tarts. She does not initially like her middle name, Pearl, as she thinks it's too girly (though Isabel finds it pretty), but later embraces it when her dad tells her it always reminds him of the band Pearl Jam. She loves bookstores and books like her mother Robin. When she's worried she chews on her pens. She enjoys writing her own song lyrics and making zines, and her favorite skater from Tony Hawk's Pro Skater is Elissa Steamer. Her style, according to an American Girl magazine style quiz, is "Mysterious Moon." One of her favorite books and movies is Matilda. She collects Grin Pins.
She's scared of talking to new people, the Y2K glitch, forgetting to do her homework, failing a test, someone reading her journal, Dad's coffee shop losing business, and falling off her skateboard; she does conquer several of these.

Trivia[]
- Nicki (and her twin Isabel) are similar to Cécile Rey and Marie-Grace Gardner, in that the characters share the same historical time period; however, they are twins, rather than representing an interracial friendship.
- While Isabel and Nicki are advertised by American Girl as covering the 1990s, the story starts three weeks before the year 2000, more accurately making the characters represent the early 2000s and turn of the millennium (to which the latter month of 1999 can be contained in). This is similar to Samantha Parkington initially being advertised as Victorian when the series is more properly Edwardian, or Kit Kittredge being given the 1934 year label when the series starts in 1932.
