Chapter by Chapter Summary
Kirsten's Promise
Kirsten says for Caro, her dog, to go home, as he can't join her at school. Caro pauses and listens for somethin before dashing off into the woods. Kirsten hears another dog barking, and fearing a dog fight, chases after Caro. She runs into the woods and down the hill after Caro, and finds him barking at a larger, black dog who is sitting on some stones. Next to him is an overturned wagon, with a strange, little boy in front. He points a rifle at Caro and commands Kirsten to get her dog away from him and the wagon. Kirsten is startled and grabs Caro quickly.
