Chapter by Chapter Summary
Chapter One: Off Balance
Ivy enters the dining room for dinner. She's not very happy about having Chinese takeout (from her grandparents' restaurant) again. Andrew brags about his achievements to the family. Then they talk about the school day. It is revealed that Mrs. Ling is enrolled at Hastings Law School. Ivy wallows on all the changes -- Julie's move, Mr. Ling having two jobs, and Mrs. Ling attending law school. Later, after dinner, Ivy gives Missy her bath and talks with her mother. Then she gets Missy into bed and tries a tradition Ivy used to do with her best friend when Julie lived across the street. There is no response.
The next day, Ivy goes to the YWCA for gymnastics practice. The Twisters (Ivy's team) are preparing for the all-city tournament. Ivy confidently does the floor exercise routine. But when it comes to the beam, Ivy reminisces a time when she failed the beam at the all-around-competition. Ivy struggles to get her confidence up and do the exercise right.
