School Dress with Shawl (1999 print).

The School Dress with Shawl (also known as Kirsten's School Outfit and Kirsten's School Dress with Shawl) was introduced to Kirsten's Collection in 1986 and retired in 2009 with Kirsten's archival. It is associated with the book Kirsten Learns a Lesson. Retail cost was $20 and later increased to $22 and $24.

Dress[]

Red print long sleeved calf length prairie dress. Print varies by age; see below. High banded collar, with bodice gathered at front with tucks at collar and waistband. Dropped shoulders. Long wide sleeves gathered to wrist cuffs. Two tucked growth stripes at skirt hem. Velcros at cuffs and up the back.

Dress Print Variations[]

In 1994, American Girl changed the material of the school dress from a cross print (similar to a division symbol) on a dark red background to a white flower and black dotted print on a brighter red background. Some earlier versions of this dress are also a paler shade of red compared to the brighter red used in the later versions.

Shawl[]

Blue plaid flannel triangular shawl. Plaid is primarily navy blue with lines of red, white, and yellow. Hemmed on long upper edge with fringe on lower edges.

Catalog images display shawl knotted around doll's shoulders.

Ribbons[]

Two dark blue 15" length (48cm), 1/4" wide (7.5mm) woven hair ribbons. Fringed edges.

These are identical to ribbons later released in the Ribbons for Kirsten set and with Kirsten's Checked Dress and Apron.
