Claudie Wells is the eighteenth Historical Character, representing the Harlem Renaissance and Great Migration of the 1920s. Claudie was released in 2022.
Personality and Facts[]
Claudie is a nine-year-old African-American Girl living in New York City at the time of the Harlem Renaissance. She is the oldest of two children with a younger brother, Jody, who is six. She and her family live in a boarding house that is owned and run by Miss Amelia. Because of this, she is able to interact with multiple others outside of her family including artists and musicians.
Her parents moved from the south as part of the Great Migration north to New York City and settled in the Harlem neighborhood; her mother specifically from Georgia, on a family farm. Her maternal grandmother still lives in Georgia (as they own the land and do not want to lose the ownership rights).
Claudie worries that she wasn't born with a unique talent like the rest of her family or friends: her father is a talented baker and works at a bakery, Angelo’s, while her mother is a news reporter. Her best friend, Nina, dances well, and others in the boarding house are artists and musically inclined. She has attempted to find skills in dancing, singing, painting, and baking, but doesn't feel she has skills in any of them like others around her. For example, while she participates in dance class taught by Miss Zula as part of the Harlem Angels, she does not feel she can keep up with the steps like her best friend Nina can. However, she does have talents that she does not think of or realize as such, such as amusing her younger brother Jody with her hand puppet shows, and later realizes that she is a skilled story teller.
One of her favorite magazines is The Brownies' Book, a magazine aimed at Negro children and published by W.E.B. DuBois.
