Brit Bennett is the author of the Claudie Wells Central Series books.

Biography[]

Brit Bennett (born 1990) was born and raised in Southern California. As a child, Ms. Bennett was a fan of the character Addy Walker and the books written by Connie Porter; she and her sister shared an Addy doll. She also played American Girls Premiere to create stories with the characters.

Her first book, The Mothers, was a New York Times bestseller, as was her second novel The Vanishing Half. She has also written essays for the New Yorker, the New York Times, The Paris Review, (including an article about the significance of Addy Walker[1]) and Jezebel.

Before she began writing Claudie's series, Ms. Bennett was able to speak to Ms. Porter about her writing career and how she was inspired by her; in turn, Ms. Porter said that Ms. Bennett may someday herself inspire a new generation of historical writers.

Trivia[]

  • Shortly after the release of Courtney Moore, Ms. Bennett tweeted both about Courtney's era being four years before she was born and that there should be a black character from the 1990s that she could write the series for.[2] She later posted that she hoped to tweet her way to writing for the company. She was then contacted by the company representatives and discussions began, which resulted in her connection with American Girl and writing of the Claudie series.[3]
  • Hardback editions of Meet Claudie include a special introduction by her, discussing how reading the Addy Central series by Ms. Porter influenced her as a writer.
