The American Girls Cookbook is a cookbook focusing on three Historical Characters: Kirsten Larson, Samantha Parkington, and Molly McIntire. It was released in 1990 and retired in 1994, and was also part of the Portfolios of Pastimes collection.

Overview[]

The cookbook is spiral-bound with a very hard back behind the back cover, allowing the book to lay flat and fold the back cover back. A removable clear sheet is included, presumably to place over the page while in use to prevent debris on the pages while cooking.

The book divides the recipes into Kirsten's Breakfast, Samantha's Dinner, and Molly's Lunch. The introduction discusses the variations of historical kitchens, food preparation, and how meals were served in each era. There are also cooking tips, written as directed towards a child cooking with a parent.

Each section has a headlining photograph with a young girl, dressed to resemble the character, at the meal in an era-accurate setting with the mentioned foods. The section opens with an account of how the character would have gone about setting up the meal, kitchen prep in the era, cooking methods, serving the meal discussed, and setting the table.

In the margin, facts about food preparation and consumption are included in each character's section.

The book was discontinued in 1994 as by then cookbooks for other Historical Characters had been released. Several recipes were reused in each character's individual book.
