American Girl Patterns are sewing patterns released by American Girl. These are intended for use by skilled tailors to make doll clothes based on then-available American Girl clothing in a Historical Character's collection. Retail cost was $20.

These were phased out in 1998 and all are now retired.

Doll Clothes[]

The first doll clothes patterns were released for Kirsten, Samantha, and Molly in 1991 as part of the Portfolios of Pastimes. Felicity, Addy, and Josefina had their patterns released around the same time as their debuts. The sets were also sometimes referred to as Pattern Portfolios, or titled "Name"'s Pretty Clothes.

Each set of patterns included reproducible cloth items in the Meet Accessories such as hats or scarves[1], the character's Nightclothes, and two or three outfits that were in the character's collection, often from the second, third, and/or fourth books or winter wear. (No outfits from the fifth books were included in any pattern.) The cloth components of their Historical Underclothes were included as well for Kirsten, Molly, and Samantha, and Felicity's set also included the shift that came underneath her meet outfit.

All the patterns began to be phased out in 1998 or 1999, with all of them gone by 2001. This was presumably to steer people towards purchasing manufactured clothes from the company instead of making them.

Children's Clothes[]

When child sized outfits were available for the Historical outfits, eight children's dress patterns were released, allowing skilled tailors to sew versions of the historical life-sized outfits. These were out for a small period in 1990. The following patterns were available at a cost of $9.95 each:

Downloadable Versions[]

Copies are available for download, notably at the AG Playthings main site. Adobe Reader or a .pdf reader is needed to read the files, as they are in .pdf form. Many of the patterns will need to be pieced together after printing, as they are sized to print on US letter sized (8.5" by 11") paper.
