The Nutcracker Sugar Plum Fairy Doll (2020), the first widely available American Girl Collector Series Doll.
American Girl Collector Series Dolls, also known as Limited Edition dolls, are small-series run dolls available for a limited time from American Girl. This article also covers one-of-a-kind, limited edition dolls sold at high cost or auctions and limited release modern outfits.
Overview and History[]
American Girl has released two distinct categories of collector dolls: one-of-a-kind dolls which are generally auctioned or sold for much higher cost than typical dolls, and collector dolls available for wider purchase which, while still more than standard dolls, are not as highly priced.

The American Girl Holiday Collector Doll (2019), the first one-of-a-kind doll released.
American Girl released its first collector doll in 2019 in partnership with Swarovski, the American Girl Holiday Collector Doll. Only three dolls were made, and each was displayed at the three American Girl Place flagship stores in Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York. The doll had a flat cost of $5,000, and while outfits were similar, each had a uniquely designed pair of shoes, making the dolls one of a kind. Each dress had 5,000 crystals placed on it, and the dresses were not removable from the dolls. The doll is a variation of Just Like You 68 with a unique longer wig, and face paint is the same as the standard Truly Me doll. American Girl arranged for the dolls to be on display for the holiday season before their buyers could pick them up. While customers could not purchase the doll on display, American Girl Place advertised a souvenir alongside the doll: the American Girl Shining Star Ornament with Swarovski crystals, available for a retail cost of $50. 2019 also saw the release of limited edition outfits based on characters from The Nutcracker ballet: The Nutcracker Prince and Clara Outfit Set and the Nutcracker Snow Queen Outfit.
In September 2020, American Girl again collaborated with Swarovski to produce a collector doll; this collector doll was the first available for wider purchase, the Nutcracker Sugar Plum Fairy Collector Doll. She was available for a cost of $250, and 5,000 dolls were available. Dolls were initially only available to Berry and Gold AG Rewards members. Each came with a numbered certificate and a box with a clear screen in front for display. The doll is a variation of Just Like You 86 but has unique face paint and pierced ears. The doll was advertised as part of the Nutcracker Collection, which included limited edition outfit sets, the Nutcracker Mouse King and Land of the Sweets Outfit Set and Nutcracker Sugar Plum Fairy Outfit. The Nutcracker collector doll came with a more intricate version of the Nutcracker Sugar Plum Fairy Outfit including a choker not part of the standard outfit. American Girl released another ornament with Swarovski, the Nutcracker Land of the Sweets Ornament, which matched the Land of the Sweets Outfit Set.
American Girl again collaborated with Swarovski to create three one-of-a-kind dolls for auction in 2020. These were the Boho Chic Collector Doll, the Fuschia Feathers Collector Doll, and the Sweet as a Rose Collector Doll. Each was auctioned off through Bidding for Good, and the proceeds went to the First Responders Children's Foundation. The dolls were similar to Just Like You dolls but came with unique outfits embellished with Swarovski crystals. The outfits were not removable. Each doll was placed on display at a flagship American Girl Place store until December 10 of that year before being delivered to the purchaser.

The one-of-a-kind modern Molly (2021) created in collaboration with Harlem's Fashion Row.
For the company's 35th anniversary in 2021, American Girl worked with designer Carlie Cushnie of Harlem's Fashion Row to create modern dressed one-of-a-kind versions of the first six historical characters: Felicity, Josefina, Kirsten, Addy, Samantha, and Molly. Each doll was offered for auction on eBay in September 2021 with the proceeds going to Girls Who Code. Although the dolls themselves were not widely available, the American Girl sold the coordinating American Girl Collector Tote, which has an illustration of the historical characters in the modern outfits.
In September 2021, American Girl released two collector dolls with Swarovski, the American Girl 2021 Winter Princess Doll; there were two unique dolls that came in the same outfit and packaging with different doll designs. Like the Nutcracker doll, each had unique face paint and pierced ears. However, the dolls now came with unique wigs as well; these particular wigs were either brunette with auburn highlights or blonde with light pink highlights. The doll had a retail cost of $250 and 13,000 were made in total. Like the Nutcracker before it, the Winter Princess doll was initially only available to AG Rewards members. The boxes now came labeled as the American Girl Collector Series. A Swarovski ornament, the American Girl 2021 Winter Princess Ornament, was made to match the brunette doll. The Winter Princess doll initially sold out by the end of October but came back in stock several times in limited quantities; American Girl promoted the remaining stock in a February 2022 sale for Valentine's Day. There was no special return limit on the dolls, leading many collectors to conclude that the dolls in stock were ones that had been returned after the holidays.

The Sapphire Splendor Collector Doll (2022), the first doll American Girl released with a fantasy eye color.
In 2022, American Girl released one collector doll with Swarovski, the American Girl 2022 Sapphire Splendor Collector Doll. The retail cost of the doll increased to $265. Like the Winter Princess, this doll came with a unique wig and face paint. The Sapphire Splendor doll has a wig with shades of purple, green, and blue, as well as pale violet eyes; this is the first time the company released a doll with a fantasy eye color. American Girl advertised that this doll was designed by Annie Nguyen, a designer who had been with the company for more than 20 years. Notably, the Sapphire Splendor doll was listed as final sale; this restriction was likely added to prevent resellers from purchasing high quantities and then returning unsold dolls. The doll was only available to Berry level AG Rewards members for the first days on sale. The American Girl site initially listed a limited amount of 25,000 dolls available, but this number was soon changed to 18,000.

The Shimmering Silver Holiday Collector Doll (2023), the first doll with white hair.
In June 2023, American Girl teased three upcoming collector doll releases; one set would debut in July, August, and September. The July release was teased with a bear graphic, the August release with a crown, and the September release with a snowflake. Initially, these dolls would be exclusively available to Berry level AG Rewards members.
On July 10, the first of the series debuted, the FAO Schwarz 2023 Toy Soldier Doll, done in collaboration with Swarovski and FAO Schwarz. The doll price was raised to $300, and 4,000 of this doll was made available. On July 30th, three dolls in collaboration with Disney were released based on three Disney princesses: Belle, Jasmine, and Rapunzel. These dolls were also $300, and 4,000 of each doll was made available. In Sept 2023, two outfits from the older American Girl Today collection were released as Encore sets; the Ballet Costume II and the Winter Magic Outfit (the latter with set accessories from the accompanying Winter Magic Accessories). Both outfits were initially offered for 24 hours but sold out quickly; they were released again in November 2023.
The company's third collector doll release of the year occurred at the end of September with the American Girl 2023 Shimmering Silver Holiday Collector Doll, which was the $265 cost of the previous year's doll and has a release number of 10,000. In late 2023, the Classic Barbie Collector Doll was released as a preorder and sold both through American Girl and on Mattel Creations; the doll pays tribute to Mattel's most well known product, the Barbie doll, as designed in 1959. The doll had a cost of $300, and 5,000 preorder sales were made available. The doll was intended to be open for preorder starting November 30th at 6 a.m. with the first 24 hours limiting sales to AG Rewards Berry members and Barbie Signature subscription members on the Mattel site only; however, preorders sold out by midday on December 1st, within less than 48 hours from release.

The Pink Stardust Holiday Collector Doll (2024), brunette edition.
On July 30th, 2024, two additional dolls in collaboration with Disney released in collaboration with Swarovski, based on the Frozen franchise: Anna and Elsa. On Sept 3, the American Girl 2024 Pink Stardust Holiday Collector Doll was released in two versions; the doll was only available to Berry level AG Rewards members for the first day of sale, followed by other levels and finally the general public. In November 2024, a holiday limited edition version of Kirsten Larson released for a cost of $230. The set includes a Kirsten doll, the complete Saint Lucia Gown, the Saint Lucia Wreath, standard meet pantalettes, a copy of Kirsten's Surprise, a unique box, and certificate. No more than 3,000 of this doll was made, and the dolls were limited to Berry members for the first three days of the sale. In November, American Girl released the Barbie Day-To-Night Fashion Pack, which was available for $75 and was limited to a quantity of 8,000 sets. It was initially available to Berry members on the first day and to all AG Rewards members on the second day, with sales opening to all customers on the third day.
